Out-of-home (OOH) media can present several challenges in capturing photographs that convey what the client wants to communicate. Does the subject look better at dusk? When lit up? When does it look busier? Which direction is the footfall or traffic heading? All of this is part of the remit for a thoughtful photographer. Don’t engage the services of someone who just turns up and records what’s there!

The brief for these location photos was to capture the taxis in the best possible positions to highlight the advertising message on the livery, emphasizing that they were now launching in Birmingham. It was clear that Selfridges’ iconic building and signage would be perfect.

In the space of two hours, I managed to get a number of creative viewpoints that fulfilled the brief to the letter. The drivers were excellent and patient when other vehicles were getting in the way or parking where they weren’t wanted.
When I was satisfied with the photographs taken, I suggested one more iconic landmark venue to try—above and beyond the brief. I persuaded one of the taxis to head over to Birmingham’s favorite red building, the Mailbox shopping destination.

The final shot is a super wide-angle view that really cements the idea of a Birmingham service that’s second to none—3 Network, pink taxis, red building. What could be better?
